Conductive Currents No.1
Conductive Currents No.1
A5 Suminagashi + copper tape original.
“An intimate work from my Art Series Listening garden 2025, where sound, conductivity, and water-based pattern converge”.
This artwork is created using suminagashi, the ancient Japanese floating ink technique, where ink is gently guided across water to form organic and unrepeatable patterns. In this process, water becomes a collaborator, shaping each piece through movement, chance, and flow.
Copper is introduced as a conductive element that interacts with the ink in unexpected ways, redirecting and layering the pattern. The resulting forms feel both natural and otherworldly, echoing growth rings, ripples, and geological layers. No two works are ever the same.
This particular piece forms part of my conductive experiments, where the copper elements allow the artwork to connect to external devices. Through these connections, I was able to translate touch and conductivity into sound, essentially playing the artwork as a musical interface. In some works from this series, subtle insertions or markings remain visible, acting as quiet traces of these sonic explorations.
Part of my Art Series 2025, this work reflects a practice centred on collaboration with natural forces, material intelligence, and experimentation across senses. Each piece is created slowly and intuitively, offering a unique presence that holds both visual stillness and the memory of sound.
While this artwork is presented as a visual piece, it carries the history of sound based experimentation embedded within its surface.
